Welcome to Zomlings series 6 - Zomlings in the Future ! (review)

Earlier in the year, you may remember that we reviewed series 5 of the Zomlings - the quirky but cute collectable zombie-based mini figurines. Last week they returned for their sixth adventure, called Zomlings in the Future - this time they've been catapulted into the future, with hi-tech vehicles and a futuristic new world with over 100 brand new characters for children to collect.

We received a fabulous package of the new Zomlings products to discover, including a Starter Pack (RRP £4), some Blind Bags (RRP 50p), some Zom-Mobiles (RRP £1.50), a Blister Pack (RRP £8) and some Capsules (RRP £2.50). The target age range is 4-7 but they appeal to both Pierre, age 8, and Juliette, age 12, who seems to love anything small, cute and collectable (Num Noms, Tsum Tsums, Shopkins, etc).

With the basic blind bags that contain one figure retailing at just 50p, they are the perfect pocket money-priced toy. It always makes collecting even more special for young children when they can save up their pennies and drag you to the toy shop to proudly buy their own toys !

The capsules containing two Zomlings are another affordable option and add extra playability.

Brand new in series 6 are the Zom-mobile vehicles which are great fun.

Each Zomling has a hole in the bottom that you fit onto the peg in the cars to stop them falling out. They are all interchangeable so you can have fun racing or driving around whichever Zomlings you like. This one reminded us of Oscar the Grouch or the Cookie Monster - it must be the eyes !

The blister pack, containing four Zomlings and four Zom-mobiles, is a great way to build up your collection quickly and also encourage imaginative make-believe play. The starter pack, costing £4, is another good value option, containing three Zomling figures, one Zom-mobile, an exclusive metal capsule and a Zomlings guide map.

The Zomlings are very small - here are a couple next to a 5p coin to give you an idea - so they can all be laid out on the collector's guide.

As well as being a great way to see how your collection is coming along, this can also be transformed into a game of snap, to see who can find the right place for a specific number of figures the quickest. Matching games are a good way of practising observation skills and concentration for young children, so this even adds some educational value.

The guide map can be used as a playmat, providing a space-age backdrop for your Zomling adventures.

Series 6 includes 105 characters to collect, with 6 Ultra Rare (silver) and 3 Limited Edition (gold) Zomlings, as well as limited edition Gold Zom-Mobiles. In addition to the lower-priced items shown here, there is now an even wider range of toys for little Zomlings fans to add to their collection, such as the Magic Trick School (RRP £5), Pirate and Race Blister Packs (RRP £12 each) and the Crazy School Bus (RRP £25).

Pierre has been obsessed with Pokemon cards for months now, but I wouldn't be surprised if he moves on to Zomlings now instead - in particular the 50p blind bags, because it takes a much shorter time to save up enough money by doing chores so he gets rewards for his labours more quickly.! The best things come to those who wait, but instant gratification is pretty good when you're an 8-year-old too !

Zomlings are available from Co-op, One Stop, Tesco, Sainsbury, Asda and a variety of other newsagents and toy stores across the UK. For further information, visit www.magicboxint.com.  You can also follow Zomlings on social media @magicboxtoysuk.
