We've been testing Mobile by Sainsbury's

One of the fabulous deliveries that was awaiting us on our return from our summer travels was this beautifully packaged basket of goodies from Sainsbury's to mark the launch of their brand new network - Mobile by Sainsbury's.

Mobile by Sainsbury's, which launched in July, promises to help you live well for less. How does it do that? By giving you not only a great deal to start with (more about that in a moment) but also offering double Nectar points on your food and fuel shopping as long as you top up your PAYG phone with credit. They say that families using the service can save up to £180 in nectar points over the course of a year, which is enough to fund 17 family size roast dinners !

While I wandered off with the champagne and chocolates and the Madhouse Mini-testers oohed and aahed at the sweeties, I bet you can guess what caught Madhouse Daddy's eye !

The very snazzy Blackberry Curve 9320 smartphone, that is part of their PAYG offer.

As Sainsbury's have partnered up with Vodafone's exisiting infrastructure, they can immediately offer coverage across 99% of the UK. We've certainly had no problems using it and we were gadding about all over the place during the holidays.

There are two price plans - Basic, which they say is for occasional calls and texts, with calls at 8p per minute, 4p per text and a data price of 50p per day (for up to 25MB). They also have three bundles available : a £10 Bundle with 200 minutes, unlimited texts and 250MB of data; a £15 Bundle with 300 minutes, unlimited texts and 500MB of data; and a £20 Bundle with 800 minutes, unlimited texts and 1GB of data. I've had a quick look around at the competitors' prices and, while there are a few cheaper deals available, this sounds like a good deal to me when you add in the savings from the extra Nectar points.

It is more expensive if you opt for a Blackberry phone. On top of the regular bundles, you need to pay for an additional BlackBerry subscription which costs an extra £5 a month. This gives you unlimited access to the BlackBerry Internet Service, including internet, email and BlackBerry Messenger, through the BlackBerry browser.  All other data use, such as downloads, streaming and uploads, will come out of your Bundle allowance if you are a Bundle customer, or be charged at the standard rate for data if you are a Basic customer. Your £5 subscription fee will be taken automatically every 30 days, provided you have enough credit in your account, and if you don't, you'll get a text to remind you to top up. (If you're thinking of getting a Blackberry, check out all the details here.)

Whatever handset you go for, one feature of Mobile By Sainsbury's that I love is their "Borrow a Pound" option. If you're out of credit and aren't in a position to top up but urgently need to make a phonecall, you can use up to a pound's worth of emergency credit which will be deducted, plus a 10p charge, from your next top up. I think all parents will find this reassuring.

If you're looking for a new phone contract, it's definitely worth having a look to see what they have on offer and they compare very favourably with what the other supermarkets' mobile networks offer.

Disclosure : I received a hamper of goodies, including a phone, SIM and credit, in order to write an honest review of the new service.
