Kids' app review : Mister Maker - Let's Make It!

The first ever Mister Maker app was launched over the summer and we were very pleased to be sent a review code. The Madhouse Mini-testers love Mister Maker, both watching it on and TV and recreating the funky arts and crafts projects afterwards, but I must admit, I wasn't sure quite how this would work as an app. Well, the short answer is, very well indeed !

The app features footage of Mister Maker, who introduces and guides users through all the activities, plus all the much-loved features from the show, including the  Doodle Drawers, Minute Makes, Frame It, The Shapes and Tocky.

The app allows you to create unlimited pictures with a variety of nearly 400 different art materials from the digital Doodle Drawers including patterns, stickers, things to glue and funny faces.

Once you've finished your picture, you can customise the frame too. Both Juliette and Pierre love spreading virtual gloopy glue all over it then sprinkling sparkly glitter and adding cut-outs. It's almost as much fun as real messy play but without any of the mess to clear up afterwards ! The more you play, the more you can unlock new materials to use in your creations. You can also use the camera function to take a photo then make a frame for that.

The Minute Make challenges come in a choice of two different themes, Nature and Underwater World, both of which appeal to budding artists of both sexes. There is also a shape recognition game with The Shapes.

You can save all your finished artwork in a folder and the app allows you to create up to four different profiles, which is very handy if you have several children who want to play on it. You can also email your artwork to people (notably the grandparents !) from the app.

Users can also choose to email their favourite creations to be featured on the Mister Maker Gallery on the P2 website to be in with a chance of winning monthly prizes.

It's a fabulous app for keeping the kids entertained while I get the dinner ready or if I need to make a phonecall. Even 4-year-old Pierre can create some lovely looking pictures and sifting through the virtual doodle drawers never ceases to bring up something new to play with.

  1. Oh this is the app of the moment in our house! My son loves to make a mess, but sometimes it isn't possible. It's great how there's so much to choose from - he's fond of the glitter, too (and I'm glad I don't have to clean real glitter up!) He's working hard on his make to submit to the competition. There doesn't seem to be many submissions to the gallery by the looks of it, so I think he could be in with a good chance of winning!
