Limited edition Heinz Tomato Ketchup with Indian Spices review

The Heinz inventors have been busy busy busy lately, coming up with not one but two brand new, limited edition twists on their old classics. After trying out (and cooking with - have you seen our cookery challenges here and here ? One more to come too !) their new Heinz Salad Cream with Onion & Chives, this time they sent us a bottle of their limited edition Tomato Ketchup with Indian Spices for our tastebuds to get to grips with !

I'm always slightly wary of anything with "Indian spices" on the label because you never know what you're letting yourself in for. It could be anything from mild korma to blow-your-brains-out stupid heat like the Bhut Jolokia that I reviewed here !

Well, Heinz have gone for somewhere in the middle. It's delicately flavoured, with a blend of of cumin, coriander and cinnamon, but not really hot. It has been created to accompany meat dishes or can be used as a dipping sauce. The kids tried it as a dip with chicken nuggets and thought it made a nice change. I also found that it makes a lovely addition to a cheese sandwich or cheese on toast. It's also been tested with omelette and mixed into plain rice which both worked well to, so it's very versatile.

Heinz have only made 1 million and 57 bottles of this limited edition variety, so I was honoured to be amongst the first to receive one to test. It's now available to buy in the supermarkets so keep your eyes open if you want to give it a try because it won't be around for long.

It's suitable for vegetarians, free from artificial colours, flavours and preservatives and 100ml contains 117 calories.

  2. I too am always slightly wary of anything with "Indian spices" on the label but I received a free bottle last week, tried it, and loved it! I'm also quite the ketchup purest ... but I didn't find this bad at all :)
