Discovery's new Green Jalapeno Relish review & recipe idea

When Discovery sent me through a bottle of their new Green Jalapeno Relish to try out, I have to admit I was very dubious to begin with. Firstly, the word jalapeno on the ingredients list usually means that you will have something so hot it takes the roof off your mouth and kills 50% of your taste buds. Secondly, it's a very bright and rather unappetising green colour !

However, closer inspection revealed that it's actually quite tame. Discovery say : "Made using only the highest quality, carefully selected ingredients, this relish has been given a ‘medium’ spice rating, which means the whole family will love it. Its easy-to-use, squeezy container also makes it practical and convenient for busy Mums and very handy for parties and picnics."

Well, I tentatively squeezed some on to my finger and had a taste, expecting it to blow my head off, and found that it's actually not hot at all. I'd even call it mild rather than medium. Tastewise, it reminds me of hamburger relish with a bit more tanginess. It's great for perking up a simple cheese or ham sandwich and, at just 105 calories and 0.1g of fat per 100g, it makes a much healthier alternative to mayonnaise. It's also lovely served in place of pickle with ploughmans or as a condiment with meat dishes.

Discovery suggest using it in fajitas too and suggest the following recipe.

All in One Chicken Fajitas
Serves 4

This quick and easy recipe has been designed to create minimum fuss, maximum convenience. Rather than frying off the ingredients separately, you cook the chicken first for 3 minutes and then add the vegetables before wrapping in a soft tortilla. All in one – it couldn’t be easier!

Ingredients

450g boneless chicken, cut into thin strips
2 tbsp oil
1 sachet Discovery Fajita Seasoning Mix
1 onion sliced
1 green pepper and 1 red pepper sliced
8 Discovery Soft Flour Tortillas

To Serve:

Discovery Salsa
Discovery Soured Cream Topping
Discovery Guacamole Style Topping
Discovery Green Jalapeño Relish

Method

  • Coat chicken in oil and Fajita Seasoning Mix
  • Heat a heavy based frying pan until very hot and add chicken
  • Fry for about 3 minutes until well browned
  • Add onion and peppers and cook for a further 2 minutes or until the meat is cooked
  • Serve with warm Tortillas, Salsa, Soured Cream, Guacamole and Green Jalapeño Relish, roll up and enjoy!
Everyone loves fajitas here at The Madhouse and this does sound a simpler way to make them, not to mention one that creates less washing up, so I'll definitely be giving it again. I'm sure the Green Jalapeno Relish would complement the chicken perfectly too.

The NEW Discovery Jalapeño Relish is available in the Mexican section of Sainsbury’s, priced at £2.09

star rating : 4.5/5

RRP : £2.09 for 300g

  1. I´m really not keen on shop bought Mexican style sauces. I make my own chipotle sauce and it only takes a quick whizz in the blender once the dried chile has been soaked. One day I´m going to attempt homemade mole.

  2. Doesn't look very appetising but I'm sure it is tasty. Might be nice drizzled on pizza, or on a cheese sandwich?
