Here at The Madhouse, we love Tinga Tinga Tales. 2-year-old Pierre and 6-year-old Juliette love the bright colours and interesting animal stories. I love the traditional storytelling aspect and the fact that the tales are based on real African folk tales and the Tingatinga art of Tanzania. So when we were asked if we'd like to review a Tinga Tinga toy, I guessed we'd be on to a winner.
We received Monkey from the Tinga Tinga Tales Bath Figures range, which also includes Elephant and Tortoise. If you're not familiar with Monkey's story on Tinga Tinga Tales, you can read it here on the Tinga Tinga website. The story explains why monkeys swing through the trees, telling the tale of naughty Monkey tricking Crocodile and having to swing through the air to keep out of the way of his snapping jaws !
The first thing we noticed was that the Monkey bath toy is a perfect likeness of the cartoon version. He has the same sticky up hair, the same huge eyes, the same big smile and the same cheeky streak because he squirts water, which had 2-year-old Pierre and 6-year-old Juliette in fits of giggles !
The packaging says it is not suitable for children under 18 months but I have to admit, I can't really see why. As long as you supervise a young child, especially in the bath (as you would anyway), I can't really see any danger, as it is one moulded piece so there are no small parts which could be a choking hazard. I could actually see the squeezy plastic toy being used as a chewy toy perfect for teething babies.
I was pleasantly surprised by the pocket money price, with the toy costing just £5. That makes it the perfect stocking filler this Christmas.
You can watch Tinga Tinga Tales on CBeebies on Thursdays at 5pm and weekdays at 5.35pm and you can also watch a selection of videos online here at the Tinga Tinga Tales website.
